Diamond Certification

When purchasing a diamond, certification provides independent verification of the diamond’s quality and authenticity. A certified diamond has been examined by a professional gemological laboratory that assesses its characteristics using internationally recognised grading standards.

A diamond certificate includes detailed information about the stone, such as:

  • Cut
  • Colour
  • Clarity
  • Carat weight
  • Diamond proportions
  • Polish and symmetry
  • Unique certificate number

This grading report ensures transparency and allows buyers to compare diamonds objectively.

Many diamonds are graded by respected laboratories such as the International Gemological Institute or the Gemological Institute of America.

How to Verify a Diamond Certificate

Every certified diamond has a unique certificate number which can be verified directly through the grading laboratory’s website.

To verify a diamond:

  1. Locate the certificate number on the grading report.
  2. Visit the laboratory’s online verification page.
  3. Enter the certificate number into the search field.
  4. The laboratory database will display the diamond’s grading details.

For example, IGI certificates can be verified online by entering the certificate number on the IGI website. This confirms the diamond’s grading report and ensures the diamond matches the certified specifications.

Many diamonds also have a laser inscription on the diamond’s girdle, which contains the same certificate number for additional verification.

Ethically Sourced Diamonds vs Conflict-Free Diamonds

Customers often ask about the difference between ethically sourced diamonds and conflict-free diamonds.

Conflict-Free Diamonds

The term conflict-free diamonds refers to diamonds that are not used to finance armed conflict or war. The international diamond industry works to prevent this through the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme, which tracks the origin of rough diamonds.

While the Kimberley Process helps prevent conflict diamonds entering the market, it primarily focuses on preventing diamonds linked to armed conflict.

Ethically Sourced Diamonds

Ethically sourced diamonds go a step further. Ethical sourcing considers a broader range of factors including:

  • Fair wages and working conditions for miners
  • Responsible mining practices
  • Environmental impact
  • Transparent supply chains

Because lab-grown diamonds are created in controlled environments, they provide a highly traceable origin and are often considered a more transparent and sustainable alternative to traditional mining.
